Serge Ibaka of the Oklahoma City Thunder will miss the rest of the NBA playoffs with a Plantaris rupture. The Plantaris is a thin muscle in the lower leg that is located medial to your beefy calf muscle. In fact, 12% of people don't even have a Plantaris. It is injured much less often than the adjacent Achilles' tendon (see my previous post on Kobe Bryant's Achilles rupture last year). Unlike an Achilles rupture, however, a Plantaris rupture never needs surgery in order to heal. It is often called "tennis leg" as many tennis players have sustained a Plantaris rupture while on the court.
